Can You Axe Someone From the Wedding Party?

The Knot’s Snarky Brides Forums (yessssssssss) feature all manner of wedding-related horror stories. The words ‘selfish,’ ‘bridezilla,’ and ‘cah-razy’ get thrown around a lot, to give you a sense of what things are like over there. It’s a great place for those of you (those of us, fine) who like to lurk in spaces where people act terrible so we can point and laugh. Sometimes though, the stories aren’t really ones to point and laugh at—there are also tales up in there that will make you wince. This is one of them.

In a thread entitled, “My sister kicked me out of her wedding!” one woman shares the following story:

So, about a month ago, my sister asked me to be in her wedding. We really don’t get along all that well but we’ve been working on it, at least I have. She’s my sister, so I’ve been trying to fix our relationship. I haven’t really talked to her much since she asked me. Anyway, I got a text 3 days ago saying that she and her fiance want a smaller wedding party than all the people they’d asked and she’s sorry but she’s un-asking me to be a bridesmaid. And, really, I get it but my feelings are still hurt. I still haven’t responded to her. :/

The fired bridesmaid, a bride-to-be herself, goes on to question whether or not she should ask her sister to be a bridesmaid. Most of the respondents fall into the “a bridal party isn’t tit for tat, but still … don’t ask her to be a bridesmaid, she sounds mean” camp. Which seems reasonable, response-wise. But that’s not really what we’re here to talk about today.

We’re here to talk about firing someone from a bridal party. Or, more broadly, from the wedding party in general.
