Brave WNBA Stars to Run the Say Yes to the Dress Gauntlet

In Depth

Tulsa Shock’s Glory Johnson is engaged to Phoenix Mercury’s Brittney Griner—an engagement between two rival players is a WNBA first—and tonight the two will subject themselves to Say Yes to the Dress: Atlanta.

The couple were engaged in August; the generally accepted and mostly inflexible wedding planning schedule clearly indicates that they must have a date and venue already in place, which means it’s high time to get Glory her gown. Once that’s taken care of, they’re free to devote their attention to seating charts and “tablescapes.” Not even a wedding planner can soften the blow of what lies ahead. So godspeed, girls, because this may be the last truly enjoyable part of your planning experience. Whoop it up.

The WNBA stars aren’t be the first lesbian couple to appear on a Say Yes to the Dress spinoff; that honor goes to Yolanda Mahoney and Bridget Harris, who appeared on Say Yes to the Dress: Bridesmaids in 2011. LaQuet Thompson and Lauren Pringle had the distinction of being the first African-American lesbian couple to appear on the O.G. Say Yes to the Dress in September 2013. In recent years the franchise has been not completely horrible about featuring lesbian couples (there’s still significant room for improvement), but featuring WNBA stars is pretty damn cool.

Most importantly, it looks like Glory and Brittney are having fun with the experience, which is more than we can say for 75% of the brides who appear on these shows.
